Over at the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Ken Mathison says that New York's hunters may be surprised to learn that the state's proposed .50 caliber rifle ban captures their rifled shotguns too.
Under state Penal Law, when you add a rifled barrel to a shotgun it becomes a centerfire rifle, and since virtually all shotgun barrels (smooth bore or rifled bore) are more than 50-caliber, they would be banned by this bill.

Are new Yorkers restricted to using Shotguns for deer hunting?
Well, at least those maniac Gun Nuts won't be able to shoot-down passing aircraft with their shotguns now, either.

Actually, it would be sort of interesting to let this .50 caliber ban pass - and not let anyone know they just banned deer hunting in New York. The political fall out that would occur once all of New Yorks hunters realized what was snuck under their nose would kill the Brady's once and for all.

Posted by: Steve Scudder at June 7, 2005 10:05 AMNY has a northern zone and a southern zone designated for hunting. I believe a shotgun is the only legal firearm that can be used in the southern zone. In the north you can use a rifle.
I was unaware of the designation of a rifled slug barrel as a centerfire rifel. Interesting and crazy interpretation. A slug gun is used in place of a rifle because the slug doesn't carry as far in the more densly populated areas.
NY needs to get an expert on staff and consult with said expert before they draft any further looney legislation.
Posted by: joated at June 9, 2005 10:19 PMThe Northern zone is primarily the Adirondacks. All other places you use shotgun, black powder, or bow. My weapon of choice was a Mossberg 500 .20ga pump. Quite satisfactory for close shots. That was in the Southern Tier below Buffalo.
