Pro-tax Democrat leads big in Virginia

After 72 years in the U.S. Senate and three marraiges to Elizabeth Taylor, John Warner, R-VA is finally retiring. Two former governors, Democrat Mark Warner (no relation), and Republican Jim Gilmore are running to fill his seat (in the Senate, not next to Elizabeth Taylor).

Mark Warner is a sleazy, no-good, lying son-of-a-bitch, pro-tax Democrat who ran a Bill Clinton style campaign for Governor. On his gubernatorial campaign trail Warner promised not to pass a tax increase. He even stated three times, "I will not raise taxes, I will not raise taxes, I will not raise taxes." Once elected, he pushed for and passed the largest tax increase in the commonwealth of Virginia. He passed a massive tax increase even though Virginia was already running a huge budget surplus.

Gilmore is a tax-cutting Republican. Gilmore pushed for and passed Virginia's car-tax relief plan that attempted to phase out our dreaded personal property tax on non-commercial vehicles. Virginia's car-tax is a bit like paying sales tax on your car, every single year. Gilmore phased it out in stages. To this day car-tax bills still show what it would have been originally, and the amount of car-tax relief (thanks to Gilmore).

Warner, pushed for and passed a halt to car-tax relief (which is effectively a tax increase). You would think that a lying, conniving, weasel like Mark Warner who passed large tax increases on every voter in Virginia wouldn't stand much of a chance. So why then is he leading Gov. Gilmore by large margins in the polls?

My guess is that he's trading on the name Warner and effectively running as an incumbent.

Um, 72 yrs. in the Senate? I know John, and I don't think he's old enough for that. And married to Liz three times?

Roland,

Sometimes I exaggerate.

I think the problem Gilmore is having is he's too tied at the hip with the religious nut job wing of the party. If he wasn't seen as a tool of the gay cootie hating religious right Newport News mafia, he'd be doing better.

Oh. Hyperbole. Ah git it!

Mark Warner does not need to run as a John Warner substitute. He was a phenomenally successful governor who took office with the state in financial shambles and left office with the state having a surplus.
His budget proposal were supported by the legislature which has a Republican major. By way of contrast, Gilmore could not get the "Republican" legislature to go along with his budget. Gilmore left the state in terrible financial trouble.
So, if you want financial disaster, vote Gilmore.
If you want financial stability, vote Mark Warner.
P.S. Mark Warner was a phenomenally successful venture capitalist and has heavy Republican financial support.
I would set Gilmore and Palin adrift on a melting iceberg.

Shel,

Mark Warner pushed through the largest tax increase in spite of the budget surplus. The surplus was revealed a mere month after Warner's tax hike was passed.

Despite having that budget surplus, neither Warner nor Kaine have done anything about the roads. Instead they used the money for more social programs and vote-buying schemes rather than fix our state highways and biways like they are supposed to do.

Mark Warner is a liar. And he may have left the government in good financial shape, but he didn't do anything for the citizens of Virginia except take more of their money from them. The last thing we need right now is more politicians who seize money from working people so that the government has a rosy financial picture.

My problem is that I have been layed off of work, Whats that word? RECESSION on top of that and now I have my car tax bill to pay. If I don't pay it, the city will take my car, and I will never find a job. People don't understand that we can't keep paying all these taxes, we the American People have nothing left to live on. Help The Governement is spending and spending, and the American people are getting the BILL. We the American people need to STAND UP AND STOP ALL TOGETHER PAYING ALLLLL TAXES. Maybe that will get Everyones attention?
