Almost as bad as sequels

I loved the 1986 version of The Hitcher, and wasn't too thrilled to see that they remade it. And on the subject of Hollywood remakes, I usually favor the original.

So I checked out the forums for the 2007 abbreviated version of the Hitcher and found this gem of a thread:

xxothnaleyxx: i love remakes because i havent seen the original ones and i cant stand the old special effects to even try watching it.

camachoborracho: that is another reason why your generation sucks.

I don't remember The Hitcher having special effects, and even if it did I don't buy the argument. Star Trek The Original Series (which was cancelled years before I was born) is much better than anything the franchise has put out since. Yeah, the computers were clunky, the effects were bad, but the shows were oh so much better. If for their political incorrectness and Kirk's bravado and overacting as much as anything. But what do I know, I still watch black and white episodes of the Twilight Zone.

Poor xxothnaleyxx... he's (she's??) missing the point not to mention a whole lot of good entertainment if the special effects are what's holding him (her??) back from old movies. Possibly the idea is to pay attention to the story and dialogue??

I still think "An Affair to Remember" has some of the best dialogue, ever in a romance-themed movie.

The new Outer Limits more often than not is gag-worthy. Like TZ, the old OL is great, even with the cheesy special effects (g).

Then again, I love the new Battlestar Galactica over the classic one. So call me hypocritical.

Actually, I disliked the original "Hitcher" - but nobody is going to out-creep Rutger Hauer in that role. I have absolutely no desire to see a remake of the film to find out that the evil bastard is the product of some illicit drug testing done by some nefarious "Big Pharma" company only out to make obscene profits with a new psychotropic drug for mild-mannered manic-depressives.

And global warming.

The originals are generally better because they were fresh. Four Feathers may be the exception but only because the three prior remakes to the 1939 version were silent. The latest remake is a completely different story and should not have been named Four Feathers.

I once dated a girl who disliked black and white movies. Contradictions in herself never bothered her. She liked old Cary Grant movies, but apparently not the black and white ones. When we saw the movie Ed Wood I turned to her and said "I'm sorry *****, it's in black and white."
