Naples: Buy crappy art or else

publicart.jpgYesterday, Naples Florida voted to force public and commercial developers to fund "public art" or risk being fined $1 per square foot. The "art" has to be in public view so everyone can enjoy it, and exactly what classifies as "art" will be determined by the Naples Imperial Government.

Sharon Kenny, chairwoman of the Public Art Advisory Committee, had questioned the opposition for a proposal that had met with enthusiasm over five years. Council will consider final approval Nov. 15.

"I am so proud of this council and grateful to them for having a vision to go forward with this program, which will ensure an increase in the quality of life in the city of Naples and for future citizens," Kenny said after the vote.

Since when is the .gov able to force private developers to purchase "public art", and how long will it be before they start forcing the rest of us to buy unmarketable junk from starving artists?

Perhaps a Starbucks can be installed and they can claim it is a performance art piece of post-modern 20th Century capitalist society.

And then they can buy some freaking coffee.

I don't necessarily disagree with your point, but the reality is that private buildings are in fact public spaces. While I'm not sure that the heavy have of guvmint is the best arbiter of public art, I do believe that this law is a positive thing. If nothing else, it's a recognition that a private building is not only a public space, but that businesses have a responsiblity to create an aesthetically pleasing and positive environments.

come on Jack, a private building is not a public space. As a property owner you have the right to refuse entry to any person for almost any reason. If they insist on entering your "public space" the police will forcefully remove them. It is called tresspass.
There is no "responsibilty" to create aesthetically pleasing environments. There is the obligation to comply with building codes and regulations.

I am sick of people trying to punish those that are sucessful. If you want ART, become a patron and donate all your hard earned money. Quit trying to tax those who are sucessful enough to develop and create useful private space.

Why is everyone so free with others hard earned money? You won't find another country on earth where it is so easy to make yourself successful. Leave my money alone and go make your own.
