Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.In related civil rights violations, FEMA is telling journalists not to take photos of dead people. And Robert Tracinski notes that what happened in New Orleans is a huge failure of the welfare state.No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

InstaEgo had a nice turn of phrase on this. He said in so many words,'We don't have the manpower to protect you, but enough to confiscate your guns'.
Out-freaking-rageous. That is one instance when I would simply refuse to comply and walk away.

That's when they either tackle you, taze you, or beat you into submission with a baton.
I don't think I would follow such an order, being either on the citizen side or the law enforcement side. Of course I doubt such a thing would be issued around here.
I wonder how many people will die because of this.
No wonder theres out of control looting in New Orleans their jerk police cheif is being a real asshat and a real idiot

Under the circumstances if people stay in n.o. they create even more problems. I have no objections to people living in filth as long as they are adults. However, there are many who have children and are keeping them in those conditions, that is wrong. If the only way to get them out is to force them out then so be it.

Unless they have Xray vision, they will need to conduct a warrantless search to determine who does and doesn't have a weapon (4th amendment).
There is no provision, even if Martial Law had been declared (which is has NOT) for the confiscation of legally owned weapons (2nd amendment).
Why would you be OK with the government taking weapons from law abiding citizens?
