Talk about a double-bind! If Dubya were to refrain from nominating women or blacks, the very same critics would charge him with wanting to bar the door against anyone but his "white-bread cronies."

This isn't just the death of the civil-rights movement; it's also the death of anything remotely resembling honesty or integrity in politics. See also this.
