City cracks down on Pit Bull owners

This really bugs me. My ex-girlfriend owns a pit bull, and it is one of the most lovable and obedient dogs I've ever met. Plus it is a great security dog for a single female to own.

Notice how the 'justification' for banning pit bulls parallels the 'justification' for banning firearms.

Dog warden staffers said drug dealers tend to keep them for security or as status symbols.

"Anywhere you find drugs, you're going to find a pit bull in that area," [Deputy Dog Warden] Stannard said.

"These dogs are basically used for nothing but fighting and guarding," he said.

Area authorities have received a few calls over the years of pit bulls attacking people and other dogs. Nationally, pit bulls have killed children and mauled people.

Stannard said some pit bulls are trained to be social with people but to go after other animals. The dogs are primarily a danger to neighborhood animals and small children, he said.

I'm surprised they didn't say "nobody needs to own a pit bull" the same way they say that about firearms. And what is so bad about using dogs for "guarding"? People have literally used guard dogs for thousands of years.

My family owned a mix poodle when I was growing up. It was territorial and would attack other dogs. It snapped at children and was responsible for a nasty bite on my cheek. (although I deserved it) The point is, you could say this about lots of dogs. Pit bulls get a bad rap simply because they are sensationalized in the news. (It is the same phenomena as 'shark bites' and 'gun violence') So much so that most people think that the "San Francisco Dog Mauling Trial" was centered around pit bulls. *

This year it's pit bulls, next year it's Presa Canarios. The year after it'll be some other breed. Owners should be punished for what actually happens if they lose control of their dogs, not for what may happen.

* Those dogs were Presa Canarios (named for the Canary Islands), but most people couldn't tell you that.

And Canary Islands comes from Insulas Canaris, "Islands of the Dogs". So the Presa Canarios are dogs named after islands named after dogs :)

When dogs are outlawed, only outlaws will have dogs.

There's gotta be a joke about registering dogs with the AKC in here somewhere.....

It's true Pit bulls do get a bad rap. Anytime a short haired thick dog bites it is assume that it most have been a Pit Bull. And many caes it was'nt even Pit Bull . Like a case were a chow/pitbull mix attack a person. They kept calling the dog a pit bull when actually it was only half. But the Pit bull half got the blame. There are at least 25 dogs that could fall under the name pit bull, most people could'nt tell a American Bulldog from an Pit Bull. And ABs that end up int animal sheleters are lable pit bulls. I know for a fact a dog will become what it's breeding, training and socalizing is or lack of. If you buy a dog from a person breeding for aggressive dogs, then don't be suprise when rover attacks. Even though you never raised the dog to act that way. Labs and Goldens have killed pets and childern. I never look at those breed surveys about which dogs that bite the most because twice a saw the Rotty as the number one biter and then 4 times the Pit and a few times the German Sherperd. Those things are inaccurate. Pits bred and trained and raised rigth make great pets. They have a better passing rate for temparment then Goldens and Beagles.

Yeah, my ex-girlfriend had a pitt bull, so I'm a bit biased. It was a sweet dog, but it did get dog-aggressive and territorial. (But then again, so did the poodle I had as a kid) It wouldn't attack a person unless that person attacked the owner.

My pitt Alex is the most gentle dog I have ever known. He loves children, cats, and all kinds of people. I adopted him from the pound when he was 8 months old. I could tell he had been abused. I have a one year old little girl, and I hate taking her to Dr. appointments because everytime the doc. tells me dont ever leave her alone with that dog! You should get rid of him! He lets her pull his ears, bite him, and be real ruff with him and he just lays there and takes it. He knows he is loved and is part of the family. The only reason the doctor says that is because of his breed. I really hate how people talk down on them. If you show them love and treat them how they should be treated, then they will be the best dog of your life. Now, with any breed of dog, treat them bad and yea they are going to be a bit testy. Pitts are the best!!!
