Do as I say, not as I do

Dana Milbank at the Washington Post is having a little fun with the Congressional hysteria over gas prices.

gas_prices.jpg

"Since George Bush and Dick Cheney took over as president and vice president, gas prices have doubled!" charged Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), standing at an Exxon station on Capitol Hill where regular unleaded hit $3.10. "They are too cozy with the oil industry."

She then hopped in a waiting Chrysler LHS (18 mpg) -- even though her Senate office was only a block away.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) used a Hyundai Elantra to take the one-block journey to and from the gas-station news conference. He posed in front of the fuel prices and gave them a thumbs-down. "Get tough on big oil!" he demanded of the Bush administration.

The state of New York, home to Chuck Schumer, imposes the highest gas tax in the nation. And it's calculated per dollar (instead of per gallon) so it will only increase as gas prices increase.

Kaine Vetos Gun Bills - Virginia is no Wild West

Virginia's Democrat Governor and Million Mom Marcher Tim Kaine vetoed a few pro-gun bills that were passed this year. In his defense, Richmond politicos fall prey to Ravenwood's Law:

Del. Dwight Clinton Jones, D-Richmond, who supported the Kaine veto, felt compelled to "stand up for my city" because of Athey's comments. "Richmond is not Dodge City [and] not the OK Corral," Jones told the House.
Ironic considering Dodge City and Tombstone both banned guns, while Richmond would like to ban guns but cannot under Virginia's Dillon rule.

Crime Spree in D.C. and Maryland

Keep in mind that this occurred in "gun-free" Maryland and D.C.:

Heavily armed gunmen carried out a series of carjackings and robberies in swift succession in the District and Maryland yesterday afternoon, firing at an off-duty federal police officer in one of the attacks, authorities said.

At least nine robberies and four carjackings unfolded within four or five miles in about two hours: The robbers, some masked, confronted people on busy streets and in an auto-parts store, and they seized several cars after boxing in unsuspecting motorists in traffic, police said.

I'm not saying this couldn't happen in Virginia. But across the river, we're much more likely to shoot back.

You Know Who Blamed for Horror Flicks

Hollyweird just got weirder. B-Movie Horror Director Eli Roth is blaming Bush for an increase in the number of horror films.

Roth claimed that people wanted to scream because of the "things going on in the world" and the government's failure to help after Hurricane Katrina. He explained that horror movies offered a safe environment which allowed people to scream. Roth went on to say the seemingly "never ending war", fighting people that do not care about our money, our "disorganized army" with "scared kids" for soldiers and the generals calling for Rumsfeld's resignation were specific reasons for the need of an emotional release offered by horror movies.

Roth also blamed the Vietnam War for the popularity of movies such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". He then claimed that because "things were calm" during the Clinton Administration there were fewer horror movies.

NewsBusters goes on to report that while the spatter of guts and blood in movies has gone up, there is no statistical link between Presidents and the number of horror films.

But if Lurch had been elected, there's no telling what would have happened.

Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time

The Missouri legislature is debating the removal of the state's "duty to retreat" law. "Duty to retreat" laws mandate that if you're attacked, you must run away (use your best Monty Python voice) prior to defending yourself with any force of your own.

Editors of the News-Leader of Springfield claim that passing such a law would "tie prosecutors hands". They think that since when cops shoot people there's an investigation, people defending themselves should face similar treatment. Passing the law, they say, wouldn't allow the government to adequately prosecute the victim.

They also say the law is unnecessary, because people already don't have a "duty to retreat" in their own home.

This bill isn't all bad. One provision would allow people who shoot someone in self-defense to be immune from a civil lawsuit. It makes sense to try and prevent frivolous litigation that can tie up the court system. However, the core aspects of the bill are based on bad information.

The bill's sponsor, Marilyn Ruestman, R-Joplin, said her bill would make it so that a homeowner does not have to retreat. But that's what the current law already says. What her bill does is unnecessarily tie the hands of prosecutors and law enforcement who want to investigate shootings.

Okay I know, another anti-gun media outlet. Yadda Yadda Yadda. But what makes this article unique is that the bill's sponsor, Marilyn Ruestman, goes on to invoke Ravenwood's Law in defense the bill.
"We're not talking about the Wild West here," she said.
Usually these references are the tools of the antis.

NBC tries to incite violence at NASCAR race

NBC's Dateline, made famous for strapping explosives to a Chevy pickup to prove that it was dangerous, was caught trying to incite violence at a NASCAR race by planting Muslims in the crowd.

Dateline just assumed that a bunch of gap-toothed, Budweiser-drinking hillbillies would start a riot if some Muslims showed up. Of course, they were disappointed when that didn't happen.

What's even more shocking, is that NBC is a NASCAR broadcast partner. Maybe NASCAR should re-examine their contract.
